I want music to flow, to take me somewhere. I don’t want to chase the notes and try to harmonize them in my mind, which is what happens when I hear improvisational jazz.

I find it very distracting.

Yet as I really delve into the spiritual world, into the soul’s journey, I realize it’s more like improvisational jazz. It is not linear; the destination is not known, and the soul is performing on many levels at the same time. It is, in fact, living many lifetimes at once, much of which won’t culminate except when we return to the full oneness.

Earth happens to be the densest, most difficult planet, which is why only those ready to learn really hard lessons agree to come here. Lessons can include forgiveness, understanding, compassion, speaking up, standing out, and choosing the next step for oneself.

Improvisation happens within communities, relationships, and our very thoughts. Trying to make them blend is often misses the point of the lessons we must learn, which is determining where we each stand within the noise.

Which note will you follow? Which seemingly conflicting note will you respond to? How will you learn and grow? 

Harmony isn’t always the goal.
