I first heard this idea of surrendering to make progress during a workout.
I could not merely will myself to get to the next level without injury unless I surrendered to my current fitness level. I want to use the 25lb weights yet the 12lb weights are still a challenge.
This is an excellent analogy for so many pursuits. One doesn’t arrive at a happy marriage, magnificent career, and enormous wealth without acknowledging your starting point and incrementally working on it.
There are no shortcuts.
- Surrender. Take an honest assessment of where you are starting.
- Set a goal. Be honest on what’s reasonable in a specific timeframe.
- Work toward your goal incrementally and at your pace.
It sounds so basic, but in our overachieving culture, it is not where we tend to start. Too often, it’s “Yes, I can do that,” followed by panic. That’s when the anxiety and feelings of failure begin to overtake the journey.
- Where are you right now?
- Where do you want to be?
- What do you need to get there?
Let’s get you there!
